42 seconds

New personal best.  42 seconds.  w00t!

Bill Evans’ “Five” played in the background.

P.S.  I really dig the gqTimer (Graphy qqTimer) I’ve been using lately.  It stores your times (using your Google login) and logs them into graphs.  Great timer — and now my go-to instead of Cube Timer.

46 seconds

Just got a new 3×3 personal best (non-lucky) solve:  46 seconds.

OLL #22
(Pi)

(R U2′) (R2′ U’) (R2 U’) (R2′ U2′ R)

Only a half-second better than my last best time, but it definitely felt smooth and easy.  I’m starting to believe the much-preached truth that consistent, slower turning is better than rushed turns punctuated by long delays of hunting for pieces.  I was excited to encounter and easily apply a newly-learned OLL (#22) during the solve.

This was with my black Dayan Zhanchi (favorite cube, by far), restickered with a Cubesmith bright-set.  The very excellent new Big Gigantic album played in the background.

another AIC reader conquers the cube

Another Adventures in Cubing disciple conquers the cube. A week ago, “Rhino” couldn’t solve a cube. We chatted, he spent some time with my Beginner’s Method tutorial, and he ordered a speedcube. Eight days later, he’s got a 2:21 1:27 on-camera solve (cheat-sheet free!) under his belt:

Congrats, Rhino!

47 seconds

With about two minutes before an early conference call, I loaded the timer and gave a cube a whirl.  47 seconds.  Personal best.

This was with my white Dayan Lunhui, restickered with a Cubesmith half-bright set.

new blindfolded 3×3 world record

As Gizmodo reports, there’s apparently a new (blindfolded) sheriff in town. Hungarian Marcell Endrey clocked a 28.80 3×3 blind solve at the Zonhoven Open in Belgium, shaving two seconds off the previous record of 30.58.

Even more impressive, the 28 seconds includes almost 13 seconds of inspection time. In other words, it was a 15-second blind solve!?!

Looks like a stickerless Dayan — which is illegal in normal competition (since you can see four sides at once). I guess that concern doesn’t exist when you put on a night shade….
